/ˈhōl(d)fast/ - the act of gripping tightly
The meaning behind this word is very important to me. It originated with sailors, a superstitious lot who covered their bodies with tattoos that they thought would protect them at sea. One such tattoo was HOLDFAST written across their knuckles. They believed that this would help strengthen their grip on the rigging of their ships. One hand for them, one hand for their mates.
The need to holdfast was evident when my family landed on New Brunswick’s shores. Hope was in short supply. The land, salt air and sea mixed with the welcoming people to bring healing and wholeness to my soul. We put down roots, grew our family and found that this was the place that we would always call home. There was a powerful resonance when I discovered what the New Brunswick motto, SPEM REDUXIT, really meant. Hope had truly been restored.
Holdfast Ink is my love letter to New Brunswick. Our province is filled with iconic images of history and legend. I want to honour all that it has taught my family about heart and home. We may have been from away, but I know that we are here to stay.
